Most people have two kidneys. They are located toward the back of the flank, with one kidney on each side. The kidneys eliminate waste material from the blood by making urine. Urine drains from the kidneys to the bladder through two tubes called ureters. The kidneys also produce hormones, including hormones that regulate blood pressure and red blood cell production.

Kidney problems such as kidney cancer (also known as renal cancer) and kidney stones occur in both men and women. Each year in the United States, an estimated 40,000 men and 25,000 women are diagnosed with kidney cancer. Much larger numbers of people develop kidney stones.
